Meet the Artist – Wave Guy

We reached out to Wave Guy to get some more insight into his beginnings, his inspirations, and what he hopes to leave behind with his art.

Originally taking inspiration from works shared on 4chan, Wave Guy has spent the last 7 years creating a wide variety of digital art for the dissident right, hoping to inspire others to take pride in their beliefs and stand up for their people.

What got you interested in creating art in the dissident sphere?

Originally I was attracted to the concept of art being political to begin with so after seeing /pol/ posting dissident art and links to discord servers I was immediately hooked and knew I wanted to join up and help make art that inspired more/other people to do the same.

“As a political artist there’s been a few challenges, the biggest being the amount of bans and suspensions I kept getting no matter where I went till I found gab and telegram.”

What tools or programs do you use for your work?

Mostly Photoshop but lately been playing away with AI tools. The AI stuff is used for ideas and images used while using Photoshop so it adds/helps with design.

How would you describe yourself as an artist?

To be honest a digital artist would probably be the best way to describe what I do. I like to play about with ideas and concepts. I’ve been doing this for over 7 years, but I haven’t really called myself a digital artist for half that until I got serious with design and learned as much as I could with the tools I use.

Who or what are some of your biggest inspirations for your art?

It was more musicians visuals on YouTube that inspired a lot of my old art, mostly vaporwave genre. Always liked the era they captured in the art they made. Artists like Luxury Elite, Com Truise and Eyeliner, there’s loads more but I’ll not list them all.

Is there anything that you hope to inspire in others when they look at your work?

“Nationalism isn’t anything to be ashamed of”

Well a few things, one is try it for yourself. Make art that encourages people to think or feel. Second, getting closer to God and your nation. Third, it’s OK to fail as long as you get back on the horse. Fourth, never stop doing what you believe in, especially to the right wing/conservative groups out there. Fifth, nationalism isn’t anything to be ashamed of, express it when you can. I know there’s more I hope my art does for people who see it hopefully in a positive way.

We’ve seen the term “Art Right” mentioned in many of your works. How do you define “Art Right”?

Well “Art Right” in general was an art group me and 4 others made with the goal to promote right wing based/themed art. I still use it even now to promote the groups existence and encourage others to adopt it and make art with the same idea and goal in mind. The name itself is clever, my friend “Ramen” came up with it. “Art done right” and “right wing art” so Art Right just seems to fit both of those in one.

Was there anything in particular that spurred the creation of your “God’s Word” series?

Every so often I feel the need to promote God even if people hate it.

Every so often I feel the need to promote God even if people hate it. I think it’s important to remind others that there is a higher force and we need to find our way towards him and what spurred me to do that particular style of art lately was thinking about not only people who have no/some faith and need to be inspired to turn to God, but people who have faith and needs a reminder of keeping the faith. I’m hoping it helps them with every day life for people in general.

Which of your works would you say you are most proud of?

I think some of my game-wave art was what got the most attention from a lot of people. There was one image in particular used for an article years back, and today still does holds up as a conversation starter while also reaching out to younger viewers. That and my tackywave God image, it summed up my idea of how to promote my views without saying anything.

What has been the biggest obstacle for you in trying to pursue a career as an artist?

As a political artist there’s been a few challenges, the biggest being the amount of bans and suspensions I kept getting no matter where I went till I found gab and telegram. Both welcomed me and helped to promote my art and I’ve been very grateful for both platforms. Other challenges like my illness did not help the situation and to be honest I probably would have given up if it wasn’t for help of others along the way.

What is one of your long term goals as an artist?

To encourage as many western people as possible to express their views and their religious freedom as much as possible in conversation, whether that be online or in real life, without feeling a sense of shame or fear from absolutely anyone. Using art to further help the main goal of normalizing views that years back would have been impossible to talk about without ridicule. Also to be honest I would love to see how far I can take the art. I probably won’t stop till I see my art in a history book, leaving an impression in the world would be important to me, but also funny.
